Planning a field trip today?

Schedule A Field Trip: Field Trips require advance booking.  Relax and paint at home or school.  Field Trips are Great for pajama parties, snow days, school projects, Scout Meetings and many other groups!  Book your field trip 3 to 4 weeks in advance (earlier around the holidays).  Short notice may incur an extra shipping charge.  Please have a dedicated area for this activity. We have tried sharing spaces with other activities and it does not work well. Please take into account set-up and clean-up time.  Contact us with your ideas or plans, and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Payment: A 50% deposit of the estimated total must be received before pottery can be ordered.  This initial deposit is required 3 weeks before the scheduled date of the field trip.  One week after the field trip, the balance due and the pick-up date will be calculated and given to the field-trip contact person.  Full payment is required before you can pick-up your pieces.  Please make the deposit and final payment in two payments only.  We accept cash, school checks, and personal checks. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept any form of credit/debit card due to the unreasonable charges associated with our accepting credit/debit cards.

Absent Students:  If a student is absent on the day of a field trip, the student can come into the studio with-in one week following the scheduled field trip, and complete the field trip project.  We cannot leave paint and unpainted pottery at the field trip site.

Employees:  Due to liability issues, a teacher must remain with the students at all times during the field trip.  Please have adequate staff to accommodate this requirement.

Helpful Hints: If you want, have students brainstorm ideas prior to the schedule field trip.  We recommend large simple pictures or designs without too much detail.  The Simpler, the Better!

Fun Facts: We pay extra for paints that are safe for our children.  Our paints are food safe and dishwasher safe; however, we recommend hand washing your art.  Our kiln fires at 1800 degrees.  You can draw on your piece with a pencil or marker and it will burn off during the firing process!  To get true vibrant colors, you must apply three coats of paint, and allow drying time between coats.  Sapphire Wizard Fired Arts is a wonderful place to spend a day, for kids of ALL ages!

Some Additional Things You Will Need to Know:

Items You Will NeedPreparation - Do's & Don'ts
  • Pencils
  • Brushes
  • Bowls
  • Paper Towels
  • Water
  • Paper Plates (wax coated is best)
  • Clean your work area thoroughly (food, lotion, and other oily substances on the bisque will cause the paint not to adhere to the piece).
  • Draw lightly on your piece with a pencil. If you make a mistake don't worry, the pencil will not show after the piece is fired.
  • Do NOT use an eraser to remove pencil marks. Paint will not stick well in these areas.
  • Pour dime sized amount of paint on the paper plates for children to share.
  • Three layers of paint, (drying between each layer), will produce a good solid color. Paints look "chalky" when dry.
  • Unpainted bisque will be white and shiny after being fired.
  • Start with the largest area and lightest colors in your design first. Dark colors will cover lighter ones.
  • To keep colors from becoming "muddy" we suggest rinsing and drying brushes between color changes.
  • When pieces are finished, please write each child's first name & last initial and date on the back with paint.
  • To ensure the safety of our staff, bisque and paint not purchased at Sapphire Wizard Fired Arts cannot be used and will not be fired in our kilns.
  • Aprons are optional and must be provided by you. ALL paint is water soluble and will wash out of most fabrics.  You may use a spot remover if desired.
  • There in no need to thin (add water) to our paints. Use them straight from the bottles.
  • Mixing paints is NOT recommended. These are special paints called "underglazes" and they do not mix like acrylic or oil based paints. Mixing can lead to undesired results.
  • Additional text and or outlining will NOT be provided unless arranged and approved by management prior to the event.

We offer several different Field Trip Packages ranging from $4.00 per painter up. Please contact Mary Ann @ (775) 265-6972 or come into the studio any day, except Thursday or Sunday, between 11:00 am and 8:00 pm for information.
